New Delhi, September 4, 2025:
The 10th Kali Mandir Ganesh Utsav was celebrated with immense devotion and vibrant enthusiasm at Pracheen Kali Mandir, Kotla. The grand event, hosted by the Pracheen Kali Mandir Trust under the stewardship of Rakesh Sonkar and the entire Sonkar family, drew a massive crowd of devotees and notable dignitaries.
Ganesh Utsav, celebrated globally by devotees of Lord Ganesha, marks the installation of Lord Ganesh idols on Ganesh Chaturthi. This ten day long festivity is characterized by daily rituals, aartis, chanting, offering of sweets and spiritual gatherings, culminating with Ganesh Visarjan—the symbolic immersion of the idol.
This auspicious occasion holds deep spiritual significance for devotees who await it year after year. The Sonkar family, based in Kotla, are staunch devotees of Lord Ganesha and have been instrumental in organizing the Utsav year after year with unwavering dedication.
The event saw the presence of several esteemed guests, including:
Neeraj Basoya, MLA, Kasturba Nagar
Anil Sharma, MLA, R.K. Puram
Satish Upadhyay, MLA, Malviya Nagar
Ravinder Chaudhary, New Delhi District President
The Spirit Behind the Celebrations
Rakesh Sonkar, President of the Pracheen Kali Mandir Trust, has been a consistent force behind the temple’s religious and community initiatives. He gained widespread recognition during the Covid-19 pandemic for his tireless work as a “Hunger Warrior.”
Amid the lockdown crisis, Sonkar initiated a Bhandara Sewa—a free food service—to support the economically disadvantaged. What began as a temporary relief initiative soon evolved into a permanent tradition at Kali Mandir. Today, the Bhandara continues daily, with people from all walks of life lining up to receive a wholesome meal—a testament to the spirit of seva (service).
Rakesh Sonkar Speaks
Reflecting on the Utsav and the ongoing food service, Sonkar shared:
“It is a matter of immense pride that we were blessed to host the 10th Ganesh Utsav celebrations at Kali Mandir, Kotla.
As far as the Bhandara Sewa is concerned, it is indeed true that our initial aim was to continue it only during the lockdown phase. But God had different plans. We were inspired to keep it going—serving humanity beyond crisis.
Our team of like-minded, passionate volunteers feels overwhelmed and honored to play the role of ‘Hunger Warriors’—especially within the sacred premises of Kali Mandir.”
The Kali Mandir Ganesh Utsav is now more than just a religious gathering—it’s a celebration of faith, community service, and humanity at its best.

When the Waters Rose, Citizens Became Warriors
By Bipin Sharma
There’s an old saying: “Adversity causes some to break; others to break records.” This couldn’t be more true for the citizens of Delhi who rose like warriors to defend their city when the Yamuna River breached the danger mark of 205 metres.
As low-lying areas were swiftly inundated, thousands had to be evacuated. While rescue teams and the administration worked round the clock to move residents to safer ground and set up relief camps, another force quietly emerged — ordinary citizens turned “Hunger Warriors.”
Recognizing the urgent need for food and essential supplies, compassionate individuals stepped up to support those displaced by the floods. One shining example is 91-year-old ex-serviceman O.P. Sharma. Alongside a group of committed citizens — Tanuj Sethi, Anila Rampuria (Green Verandah), Anurag Khandelwal, and myself — he led a langar sewa (community kitchen) at a relief camp in Mayur Vihar Pocket 1.
It may have seemed a small act, but it carried a message loud and clear: that in times of crisis, the spirit of humanity can—and must—prevail.
Speaking at the camp, OP Sharma shared his reflections: “When Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, he said, ‘That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.’ Taking a cue from that, our efforts as Hunger Warriors may seem small, but they carry immense potential to inspire others. Just as we saw during the COVID-19 lockdown, when citizens across Delhi rose as Covid Warriors to support the less privileged, now too is a time for every capable citizen to step forward. In adversity, the true test of character is revealed. The recent floods have impacted many, but our spirits remain unbroken. Because a city can never truly fall when it is lifted by the strength of its own people. Few years down the line, those who rose to the occasion will be remembered — not just as citizens, but as Redeemers of the Flooded City. This will be remembered as the day the city fought back.” The spirit of resilience and collective humanity makes all the difference in times of crisis. This powerful transformation — from citizens to warriors — is the essence of humanity. It is in these moments of shared hardship that the true soul of a city shines.”
Added Anila Rampuria from Green Verandah, “The fact that a 91 year old veteran took the lead reminds us that leadership and service know no age. It also challenges younger generations to follow that example. The flood may have physically divided or displaced communities, but emotionally and morally, it united them.”
Tanuj Sethi, team member of the langar sewa said, “Ordinary people can rise to the occasion and embody true civic responsibility, not just leaving it to the government or offical bodies. Even amid overwhelming circumstances, individual and collective actions can restore hope and dignity to those most affected.”
Gopal Singh, a volunteer observed, “Ordinary citizens stepped up in extraordinary ways during a time of crisis. Their acts of deep compassion, resilience and solidarity, rooted in the essence of humanity will always be hailed.”

A devotional program dedicated to Lord Ram was recently organized at Hari Om Mandir in Lajpat Nagar-4, New Delhi on October 14, 2024. The key highlight of the event was the gracious presence of Dr. Ram Avtar Sharma who shared insights about his unique crusade of identifying numerous places of mythological importance where Lord Ram had embarked upon during his lifetime. Much to the sheer delight of the large gathering of attendees, Dr. Ram Avtar informed that as many as 290 such places had so far been identified. These places were on the threshold of going into oblivion had they not been identified.
During the course of the event, there was a short Film Exhibition that showcased the identification of all such holy places where Lord Ram had visited at various time intervals. A painstaking initiative of Dr. Ram Avtar Sharma (Managing Trustee of Shri Ram Sanskritik Shodh Sansthaan), the key objective behind this exercise has been to inspire masses about the virtues and ideals of Lord Ram.
In an exclusive interaction with Sr. Journalist Bipin Sharma, Dr. Ram Avtar Sharma shared, “Lord Ram is our Idol and our guiding force. We owe our existence to Lord Ram, and thus it becomes imperative on our part to follow the path shown by our Lord. We undertook this noble mission of identifying numerous important places that our Lord travelled to, during the course of his lifetime. Blessed by the visit of Lord Ram, these places have immense mythological importance, and will surely be regarded as “Pilgrim Centres” in times to come for countless of Ram devotees all over the globe. We have always been proud of our Sanatan Dharma, and earnestly desire that the Gen Next too remains bonded to the ethos, culture and teachings of our most revered God’s, Goddesses, Sages, Saints and Seers. There should be due emphasis on integrating the much needed Holistic component with the overall academic curriculum. This will play a crucial role in character building of youths, and subsequently contribute towards Nation Building on the whole. It is equally essential for our youths to remain connected to the age old heritage and values of our country. The youths should tread on the path shown by Lord Ram, and pledge themselves towards our great nation. We are on the threshold of becoming a SuperPower, VishwaGuru and a truly Self-Reliant Nation. The youths have a pivotal role to play in helping us realize this glorious dream. Women are revered as Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati and we worship them as “Shakti”. It should be the endeavour of every citizen to ensure the well-being and security of our sisters, daughters and mothers. I am overwhelmed to see a large gathering of attendees from varied walks of life who have come to hail and celebrate the discovery of holy destinations that our Lord Ram visited during the different phases of his lifetime. While our Armed Forces are doing a marvellous job defending the Borders and Sovereignty of the country, the civilians on the other hand, have an equally critical role to play by not only inspiring the youths to imbibe a virtuous path, but also make them aware about the timeless legacy of our country.”
The key organizers of the event were Kashinath Ji and Activist Subhash Sethi.
Notable among those seen in attendance included the likes of Sharad Kapoor (Deputy Chairman, Central Zone, MCD), Sunil Gaudas, H.S Gulati, R.C Narang, Dayal Dass, and many others.
