After an exhilarating Day 1, Day 2 was also no less exciting with a fine spectacle exuberance & excellent sportsmanship
The key highlight of the day was an eclectic symphony of guitar riffs and soulful melodies by the gifted Mayank Maurya.
The morning of URJA Day 3 began by winding up the remaining matches, some of which were dead rubber, while others were “deciders’ for determining which team was to go to the finals. The most awaited moment was the finale of different games, which was predominantly dominated by the home team Thapar. Chitkara University stole the thunder in cricket, and managed to emerge victorious. In the process, Chitkara University became the only team to secure a tournament win in URJA 2024. In Volleyball, BMU displayed a formidable performance, yet it was the Thapar’s team that staged a remarkable comeback to clinch a 3-2 victory.

The mega sporting carnival culminated with a scintillating dance and music event titled “CINEYOUTH”. Held at OAT, “CINEYOUTH” was a joint initiative of URJA & TMC.

Stand-up comedians Rohit Bhatt and Krishna Pandey brought smiles on everyone’s faces, but the real star of the show was Rajat Chauhan, whose hilarious college based anecdotes and faculty jokes had the audience in splits.

The force behind URJA and various other such mega events at TIET has been the Dean of Student Affairs (DOSA), Dr. Inderveer Channa who has incessantly been playing a sterling role in various student related activities since the last few years.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Inderveer shared, “At TIET, our focus has incessantly been on providing Value based Education. The integration of academic excellence with co-curricular activities is the hall mark of TIET. The most splendid facet at TIET is the perfect integration of various student societies and clubs with academics. No two thoughts, that this is what clinches the battle for us, thereby giving us an invincible edge over other prominent Institutes of the country. Being firm believers of holistic education, we lay colossal emphasis on all round development of a student, and ensure that he or she inherits and integrates the best of human values and cultural traditions, besides being good with academics.
Beyond a single minded pursuit of academic excellence, we also focus on the student’s all round development. We have a rich assortment of co-curricular activities. The diverse programmes and activities aimed at fostering quality of mind, ethical standards, global vision & social cognizance, let the students shape their own TIET experience and grow. A Kaleidoscope of highly stimulating and innovative activities and events have played a key role in developing Exploration and Innovative Problem Solving, thus enabling the students to become more assertive and pro-active learners. The different societies and clubs at TIET provide the students an opportunity to explore, experiment, evaluate, adopt and apply what they have learnt and their outstanding performance in various events like hackathons, debates, dance performances, best design of formula car etc is the endorsement for the same. We advise the fresher students to become part of any society or club of their choice at TIET, as it’s a great stress buster. Indulging in co-curricular pursuits is akin to meditation, and therefore, students must balance time between academics and hobby pursuits. We have always believed that academics and sports supplement each other in realizing and unravelling the student’s full potential. Sports empower students to cope with the challenges of an increasingly competitive world. We have numerous sports facilities in the campus namely Basketball, tennis, lawn tennis, swimming, cricket, football, volleyball, handball, hockey, badminton, chess etc. In addition, we have the yoga room and the gym hall.”

Congratulating the winners of URJA 2024, and lauding the painstaking efforts of all the members of the organizing team, Gurbinder Singh, Registrar TIET said, “URJA 2024 has been a grand success, and every student and staff member who contributed in making this possible, deserves all round plaudits. Thapar Institute is a name to reckon for students from all over the globe as our curriculum is designed to ensure the all-round development of each student. We organize student events at a frequent pace, and this is what makes life so fascinating.”

Unplastik India’s tireless initiatives for a sustainable environment

By Bipin Sharma

India, a Nation of 1.4 billion, produces approximately 5 Lacs Tonnes of Plastic Waste every year. Of this, less than 10% of it is actually recycled. Since Plastic Waste is not Biodegradable, it is bound to stay in Landfills and Soil for more than 500 years, thereby making the Land barren. It’s a well known fact that Burning of Plastic releases Toxic gases which lead to rampant Air Pollution. This, in such a scenario, what are we really doing about it..
Well Visionaries like Siddharth Jain, Founder of Unplastik India seems to have some answers for this ageless problem.

As a Pioneer in Door to Door collection of Plastic Waste and Recycling it FREE OF COST, his organization “Unplastik India” has been collaborating with various RWAs, and aiding them to process & recycle maximum Plastic Waste.

In a freewheeling conversation with Senior Journalist Bipin Sharma (BS), Founder of Unplastik India Siddharth Jain (SJ) shares his thoughts and long term vision for helping India achieve its net zero emission targets.

BS- What is Unplastik India all about?

SJ- Unplastik India is a Self Funded organisation with in-house reprocessing plant in Gurgaon. We are currently reprocessing around 1000 kgs of Plastic Milk Bags & Plastic packaging Film on a Daily Basis. I will urge all the like minded volunteers to join us in our endeavour to help India achieve its “Net Zero Emission Targets”. The key thrust is on Collecting and Recycling Plastic. Citizens from all walks of life can come forward and become an “Unplastik Green Avenger”.

BS- How did the genesis of Unplastik India happen?

SJ- Looking at the Plastic waste being generated in our house on a daily basis, and I, being an ex plastic manufacturer, the idea of recycling household single use plastic waste came into being.

BS- What is the main concept of Unplastik India?

SJ- Door to Door collection of Single use plastic waste so that it does not reach the Landfills.

BS- What are the ambitious plans in the pipeline for Unplastik India?

SJ- Manufacturing Innovative, Sustainable products from the Waste. We are already in discussions with IIT, MIT & Michigan University to make Fabric / Shoes / Glue and Leather out of Plastic, and other waste which is going into the landfill.

BS- How do you aspire to make Unplastik India a national movement?

SJ- We already have a recycling centre in Gurgaon (NCR). We hope to open one in each district of India

BS- Who are the key stakeholders that you will be engaging with in your endeavour?

SJ- We will be engaging with the Government, Corporates, eminent Personalities as well as various civil society members.

BS- What is the support that you seek from the government?

SJ- We will be grateful to the government if they could help us propagate our ideas to a larger segment of the society, thus helping us create mass level Awareness.

BS- How has the response of the society been so far towards your mission?

SJ- The response of the citizens has so far been overwhelming, and this has motivated us to work even more harder in helping our great nation achieve the net zero emission targets.

BS- What is the key objective of Unplastik India and how realistic are your plans?

SJ- Our key aim has been on reducing the burden on Landfills and on creating a “CIRCULAR ECONOMY” with the waste being generated. The same is already being done in some western countries.

BS- What are the challenges that lie ahead for the team of Unplastik India?

SJ- Frankly speaking, most of the problems stem due to the nonchalant attitude of the local government agencies, and this poses a big challenge for us.

BS- What makes you believe that your concept will inspire a large segment of the society in times to come?

SJ- Our concept is already inspiring a substantive chunk of the society as many passionate volunteers are taking out time from their busy schedule for helping us.

BS- What is the USP of Unplastik India that sets you apart from others in the fray?

SJ- Our vast experience of Logistics, and of Plastics is what gives us the enviable edge over others in the race.

BS- What are the plans to tie up with Global players in order to expand the outreach of Unplastik India?

SJ- We are already in discussions with Top Scientists of the world, as well as with some International corporates. We are planning strategic tie ups for use of technologies that they have already developed.

BS- How will you motivate the common man to become an integral part of Unplastik India?

SJ- Our first step in this direction will be by distributing some of our products to the BPL citizens free of cost. This will be ensured by undertaking other key initiatives.

BS- How can Unplastik India collaborate with the Central and the State governments in its Mission of reducing the carbon footprints?

SJ- We will achieve this by initiating to pick waste in totality, and ensuring 100% recycling of the same. For this project, we will need the infrastructural support from the Government.

BS- What are the various activities that you have planned and conceptualized for spreading widespread awareness amongst masses towards mitigating the use of plastic in their day to day lives considering its myriad hazards?

SJ- We have planned numerous activities and campaigns in creating mass level awareness towards mitigating the use of plastic from our day to day lives. Besides, Citizens need to pledge themselves towards ‘environment’. It is imperative on the part of the citizens to keep a tight vigil on those polluting the environment. Citizens have to inform the concerned authorities in case they witness illegal factories causing hazardous pollution. Citizens across
the length and breadth of the country should be motivated to pledge themselves for germane causes such as environment protection and safeguarding the Planet Earth from the perils of Global Warming. Collective, sincere efforts by government and citizens will undoubtedly help improve the overall air quality, thereby
ensuring a healthy lifestyle for one and all.

BS- Do you intend to involve the youth brigade in achieving your targets?

SJ- Unplastik India has already started spreading awareness amongst different Schools and Colleges, and are encouraging students to be part of our Movement. We are initially also offering them some Incentives in order to motivate them.

Rakesh Kumar Sonkar- The Gem of a Samaritan

By Bipin Sharma

Having carved a niche for himself as a Social Crusader, Political Activist & a successful Entrepreneur, Rakesh Kumar Sonkar has made a definitive mark as a “Gem of a Samaritan” all thanks to his tireless endeavour of feeding countless stomachs in the last three years.
For someone who wears many hats, Sonkar emerged as a “Corona Hunger Crusader” during the Lockdown phase when he and his team of volunteers worked assiduously on ground zero to ensure that no one remained empty stomach during the Pandemic.
Realizing that a substantial population were without their daily livelihood, and a regular source of income to sustain themselves, Sonkar accepted the gauntlet, and got going on a war footing note. He procured various food items, and then meticulously executed a “safe distribution plan” to deliver the food packets to the needy ones, strictly adhering to all the safety norms and protocols of Covid. Equally remarkable was his role in arranging oxygen and medical facility for the needy ones during the second spell of Covid in 2021.

For someone who firmly believes in “Sewa Parmo Dharma”, Sonkar is always in the forefront when it comes to organizing Bhandara’s on any momentous occasion round the year.

Sharing more on the same, Sonkar, the Samaritan says, “My Mission is to serve the humanity and the Nation. We are all dreaming of a “Naya Bharat” which is possible only when every citizen will play a substantial role in “Nation Building” as well as towards Humanity. With the blessings of Kalka Maa, I felt an inner calling during the Lockdown phase to play the role of a “Hunger Crusader” as Covid was wreaking havoc. We delivered nutritious food as well as medicines to countless people including numerous Covid positive patients and their families. Realizing that the impact of second Covid wave on “lives and livelihood” was more severe than the first Covid wave of 2020, our team of volunteers braced themselves up for the bigger challenge, and got going on ground zero from day one. Much like the outbreak of the Covid virus in 2020, the surge of the virus in 2021 took us by a storm. As a result, we realized that the challenge too was manifold. Since most of the people who had tested positive were unable to cook food at home, and were restricted from stepping outside their homes for buying medicines, our team of dedicated volunteers delivered home cooked food as well as medicines free of cost to all such needy ones. Senior citizens comprised a substantial segment of people that we reached out to, in those challenging times. Our first and foremost priority was to extend a helping hand to senior citizens who were staying alone without their children. Then our focus was on providing food and medicines to those below the poverty line and the migrant labourers. We were all aware that every team member had to play their role dedicatedly if we were to help the large number of sick and the needy ones around us. We feel truly blessed that we got a chance to work relentlessly for Humanity. Our team played a significant role in spreading awareness among the underprivileged segments of the society about the pertinence of following social distancing norms. Extraordinary circumstances often bring along with them extraordinary strength and resilience . ..and help ordinary beings evolve into extraordinary Heroes. Kalka Mata Devotees have in their own special way etched their names as True “Champions of Humanity”. My role model has been my late father Sh. Jagdish Chander Sonkar who was a true Philanthropist of his times, and initiated this tradition of inviting people from all walks of life on major festivals. As a visionary who was way ahead of his times, my father always stood for the cause of the poor and the needy persons. I am extremely grateful to our Hon’ble MP Meenakshi Lekhi for being a great pillar of support and inspiration to all of us in the last three years especially.
Frankly speaking, when we started the Bhandara sewa in 2020, we were unsure about how long we would be able to continue with our endeavour. It takes immense pleasure to share that our Bhandara Sewa has been continuing unabated in the premises of Pracheen MahaKali Mandir in Kotla till date even though normal life has been restored post Covid. I firmly believe that the spirit of humanity should never stop, and this is the reason why I have decided to continue the humanitarian Sewa for the rest of my life. I attribute all this to the Divine Blessings of Maa Kali who has given us the strength and grit to continue with our noble mission sans any break, for all irrespective of their caste, creed or religion.”

Sonkar has also been an integral part of numerous blood donation camps, and more importantly been organizing annual mass wedding of poor and needy girls.

Going by his sheer passion, nobleness and “never say never die” zeal, Sonkar is not just winning countless hearts, but is all set to scale new heights in times to come!!
